Many people don’t realize the gay panic defense is still legal in most of the U.S. — and that it can reduce charges or excuse violence against LGBTQ+ people, including murder. In this video, we break down what the panic defense is, where it came from, how it’s used in court, and why it continues to threaten the safety of queer people today.
While 20 states and Washington, D.C. have banned this panic defense, LGBTQ+ people in much of the country remain unprotected. Understanding this defense is the first step toward advocating for safer, more equitable laws.
